The Black Reel Awards was launched in 2000 by founder Tim Gordon, a film critic and former radio host and his partner Sabrina McNeal. Over the past seven years, The Black Reel Awards has presented over 400 nominations and honored over 125 actors, directors and filmmakers with its award. Past Special Achievement Awards honorees have included Jamie Foxx (Vanguard Award), films “Amandla: A Revolution in Four-Part Harmony” and “City of God.”
The two-day event includes a opening night film premiere and the Black Reel Awards presentation. Past weekend gala premieres have included the box office and award-winning hit, Diary of a Mad Black Woman.
The Black Reel Awards is project presented by the Foundation for the Advancement of African-Americans in Film, a nonprofit organization with a mission to target, identify and prepare candidates who will represent the next generation of filmmakers and potential film executives that will be able to provide a different sensibility to the stories currently told onscreen.
The Foundation seeks to provide educational opportunities to this next generation of filmmakers and studio executives through two programs, Reel Kids and the Producer’s Institute. Both programs will provide scholarships opportunities to minority junior high, high school and college graduate students who pursue a business career in the movie and television industries. By establishing partnerships with corporate sponsors and private donors, the Foundation will continue with the important work of redefining our “reel images” for the next generation.
