Black Reel Award winners Ava DuVernay, Tina Mabry, Gina Prince-Bythewood and nominee Victoria Mahoney have each had an impact on Black cine ma with distinctive stories spotlighting what it means to be a Black woman in America.
DuVernay won two Black Reels this year for her second film, Middle of Nowhere. Mabry secured her place winning Outstanding Independent Film for her sensational drama, Mississippi Damned and Bythewood won her acclaim for Love & Basketball, earlier this decade. Mahoney’s coming-of-age drama, Yelling to the Sky was also nominated this past year for Outstanding Independent film and heralded her as a strong female voice on the rise. #powerfoursome #blackwomendirectorswhorock
