Although it was nominated a staggering 14 times (a Black Reel Awards record), Tyler Perry’s sexual abuse drama, For Colored Girls took home only three awards this year. The second movie of the year from the prolific writer/director/actor finds him in familiar territory once again as a boozy, disinterested nightclub singer reluctantly takes in several distant family members and reconnects with her family and finds love at the same time.

Starring Taraji P. Henson, Mary J. Blige, Brian J. White and newcomer Hope Olaide Wilson, Perry is clearly making strides as a filmmaker.


Screenwriter/director Tyler Perry’s dual story of his alter-ego Madea going buckwild in the pokey and a young lawyer trying to get an old friend off the street was easily his most successful film grossing over 90 million and making the auteur one of the most respected names in Hollywood.
